The Call is Closed!

Thank you to everyone who applied! We will have further news on the first round of selected candidates very soon!

From March 1 thru March 31, 2012 Women On Bikes SoCal accepted applications online for candidates to receive a scholarship to become League Certified Bicycle Safety Instructors (LCI's) accredited by the League of American Bicyclists. From these applications Women On Bikes SoCal, working in collaboration with Bike Long Beach, the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition, and local bicycle advocacy organizations, will choose between 15 and 18 candidates for the first round of training. 12 women will be selected for the final full LCI program.

This scholarship program is worth over $850.00 per recipient of the most comprehensive bicycle safety instructor training in the country. Part I of the training takes place on a weekend in mid/late April (if you haven't already passed the pre-requisite Traffic 101), part II takes on a Friday, Saturday and Sunday in mid/late June - and may just be a Saturday & Sunday for convenience!

Women On Bikes SoCal is proud to be joined by Bikeable Communities, the California Bicycle Coaltion, Beach Cities Bicycle Coalition, and Bike Long Beach to help sponsor this program. Can you help? Please find our corporate sponsorship overview + benefits kit here. We also gratefully accept individual donations online. You can find those donations + benefits here.

Any candidates who have not yet passed the pre-requisite for the LCI program - the League of American Bicyclists Traffic 101 class - will be required to complete this course, which will be offered in Long Beach in mid/late April 2012. Women on Bikes SoCal is delighted to announce that Bike Long Beach has agreed to host this prerequisite Traffic 101 course in Long Beach free of charge to the selected candidates.

From those candidates who have already taken Traffic 101, and those candidates who take the Traffic 101 class in Long Beach, 12 final candidates will be selected to take the League Certified Instructors (LCI) course in June in Long Beach. Please understand that being selected to take the LCI course does not guarantee accreditation. Lead instructor Chris Quint will work in collaboration with Women On Bikes SoCal, Bike Long Beach, the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition and local bicycle advocacy organizations to make the final selections.

Women On Bikes SoCal is looking for the following for this first scholarship program:

  • Female candidates who are at least 21 years of age
  • Southern California women who live in the greater South Bay, South L.A., East L.A., Long Beach and the 714 areas of Orange County
  • Candidates with strong leadership skills who will be engaging and dynamic teachers
  • Candidates with strong community involvement and excellent references (3 will be required)
  • A flexible schedule and the time not only to commit to taking these classes, but also accept the requirement of donating back 25 hours of bike safety training to their local community over a one year time period from receiving their accreditation
  • A level of physical fitness that allows the candidate to easily handle the “on bicycle” course work
  • We are especially interested in candidates who are bi-lingual and/or represent an underserved population in their community.

Any questions about this application should be sent to wobsocal@gmail.com.
